Accelerate Your Career Through Authentic Networking
We’ve all heard it, right? We know that 80% of jobs are secured through networking - yet, the idea of making random small talk with strangers is so unappealing that we’d rather remain stuck.
I totally get it - awkward networking is the worst. But I promise that authentic networking, done correctly, is life-changing.
Here's my 25/75 Rule: You can spend 25% of your time on traditional job search activities; the other 75% should be on building relationships. Networking is how to land your ideal job.
I help clients create strategic, authentic networking plans. I coach them on how to find contacts, what to say, and how to say it - as well as what NOT to say.
Are you making awkward networking mistakes?
Sending LinkedIn requests without a personalized message
Requesting a favor from a new connection
Sending mass emails asking your contacts to 'let you know if they hear of any opportunities'
Asking for an informational interview and then talking about yourself the whole time
Attempting to network only when you're job searching
Authentic > Awkward
Informational interviews are truly most underutilized networking tool that will help you clarify and achieve your professional goals. Simply put, an informational interview is a conversation with someone you’d like to learn from - typically someone who is currently working in the field, company, or position you aspire to join. (Notice I said LEARN from, not ask for a job!)
I believe so strongly in informational interviews because they have been SO impactful in my life. Not only have they helped me develop lasting relationships, but I've also landed two positions as a direct result of inviting my future supervisors to informational interviews before there was even an available position in their department.
Authentic networking lies in the magic of the one-on-one connection you build when you humbly seek the advice and insights of someone you admire. People LOVE helping other people - sharing professional wisdom not only makes people feel good because they are supporting others, but it also boosts their own ego as they talk about themselves.
